友達： Are you coming to John's party tomorrow night?

（どうだろう、場合によるな）
友達： It depends on what?
（何の場合によるの？）
あなた： Well, it depends on how much I can get my work done till then.
（それまでに仕事が終わるかどうかによるかな）
友達： Ah, you don't want to come, do you?
（あー、行きたくないんだな？）
"It depends." は「場合による」「まだわからない」「微妙です」などの
ニュアンスを持つ決まり文句です。
曖昧な返答にも使うことができる便利な表現です。
"○○ depend(s) on ～" で「○○は～次第だ」「○○は～による」の意味になります。
たとえば、
"It depends how things go." （どうなるかそのとき次第＝出たとこ勝負だ）
"It depends on luck." （運に左右される＝運次第）
などの言い方ができます。
